Dear Santa,

I've been a good mom all year. I've fed, cleaned, and cuddled my three children on demand, visited the doctor's office more than my doctor, sold 62 cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground, and figured out how to attach nine patches onto my daughter's Girl Scout sash with staples and a glue gun.

I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my son's red crayon on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when I'll find anymore free time in the next 18 years... read more.

Do you know how much you mean to me?

November 6, 2003

Do you know how much you mean to me?
I'm not sure that you do,
So I'm writing you this little note
To tell you 'I Love You.'...read more

The Unemployment Blues

September 19, 2003 – As a recent casualty of the jobless recovery, I have had time to ponder several points in between filing unemployment claims and seeking work where little is to be found...read more!

The Air Travel Incident

August 1, 2003 – Every once in a while I hear about the glory days of air travel from one of the older folks. It is my understanding that a long time ago, people would get dressed up to take a plane ride and they were treated very well, regardless of the destination or class of ticket. I wonder if the change from that time to our current cattle-call air transport norm was gradual or like turning off a light switch once the airlines were no longer concerned with hospitality. It’s not just the airlines either… generally there is no accounting for the grouchiness of fellow travelers anymore... read more!

The Popcorn Incident

September 10, 2003 – I don’t know about anyone else, but on a regular basis I’m reminded of the changing of times and the changing of courtesies many of us have grown accustomed to while growing up. Things like opening the door for somebody else, pulling a chair out, saying please and thank you, etc. We of my generation (X) could reasonably expect some measures of old-fashioned courtesy on occasion in the past, but it is certainly not too common anymore. But for all the complaints about human nature, one can always be surprised by the unique responses and actions to certain circumstances by our fellow man. I can attest to the fact that the kindness of human nature has not dissolved; based on a particular college experience I had... read more!

The Principal Principle

July 1, 2003 – There is a feeling one gets when they are uncertain about a situation that will occur in the immediate future. I seem to get it quite a bit, but I used to get it even more often in the past. You all know the feeling; that sense of impending yet uncertain dread where you are not only wracking your brain to determine the cause of unease, but you are already working on the ways to get out of the mess you’re pretty sure (but not positive) you’re in. I call it the Principal Principle. Allow me to explain...read more!

The Natural Childbirth Thing

August 25, 2003 – People failing to adapt to changing times really have me confused. Take for example one of those masochistic pregnant women who insist that they will undergo the whole birthing shebang “naturally”. I am really confused by that....read more!
